She was often paired in scenes with her best friend, Marissa Cooper, Summer became the female lead character of the show's fourth season. During all this, she had a long lasting relationship with leading man Seth Cohen. In a flash forward, she finally marries Seth. Summer is, throughout the first few episodes, portrayed as a shallow, materialistic gossip who is ditzy and can have an occasional bitchy nature. Spoiled by divorced father, she considers him to be her best friend, and his opinion matters are much, if not more than her own. Summer was unusual in combining the qualities of a conventionally attractove and desirable character with a tough, outspoken, "take charge" attitude. Sandy was originally a public defender, which brought him into contact with troubled teen, Ryan Atwood, whom he eventually adopted and took in as his own after his mother abandoned him. He has since then gone into private practice in a law firm, before going to start his own and finally taking over his late father-in-law's company, the Newport Group. After Seth accidentally burned down the Newport Group headquarters, Sandy returns to the public defender's office. "Kirsten Cohen was born in Newport Beach in Orange County, California. Kirsten is the eldest daughter of Caleb and Rose Nichol. She comes from a very wealthy background: her father is a real estate developer who founded the Newport Group, one of the most powerful companies in California. Kirsten was raised Presbyterian. She is presumably Scottist American. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in art history. During her college years, she met her future husband Sandy Cohen. They married, and Kirsten gave birth to a son, Seth. Shortly after Kirsten began her family, her mother became ill with ovarian cancer. This prompted the Cohens to move back to Newport. She has since joined her father at The Newport Group, becoming the workaholic she was introduced as at the beginning of the show. Besides Seth, she has one other child: adoptive son Ryan."
